Erkki Melartin raised the Helsinki Conservatory to the top
Erkki Melartin played a significant role as a developer of Finnish music education.
In addition to his work as a composer, Melartin played a decisive role in the development of Finnish music education. He founded an orchestral school in Viipuri and later directed the Helsinki Music Institute, which during his time grew into a conservatory and subsequently the Sibelius Academy. His pupils included Uuno Klami, Aarre Merikanto and Helvi Leiviskä, among others.
