Evacuated from Käsikisalmi – the Karelian town's arduous road 1939–1944 The first evacuation on the eve of the Winter War (autumn 1939) When the threat of the Winter War became apparent in autumn 1939, the residents of Käkisalmi were ordered to be relocated to Ostrobothnia. The town's folk were billeted in Ähtäri. The rural municipality's residents were directed to Ylistaro, Lapua and Nurmo. Life on a ration card – sense and taste the era of scarcity
The Käkisalmi Museum's summer exhibition, "Aisti ja maista pula-aika" (Sense and Taste the Era of Scarcity), takes visitors on a time travel journey to the era of scarcity and traditional Karelian food. In the recipes from the era of scarcity, simple ingredients are transformed into nourishing everyday treats that speak of survival, resourcefulness, and a strong culinary tradition. The exhibition opened to the public on 1 June and is on display until 31 August 2025.
