The Käkisalmi Museum is a cultural center run by the Käkisalmi Foundation, which brings out The city of Käkisalmi and the rich traditions of Karelian culture in the heart of Heinola.

The museum is a part of Heinola’s cultural center on Kauppakatu. Together with the city library, the city museum, the art museum and The Aschan House, it creates a versatile for the wonderful experiences of the environment.

Heinola and Karelian heritage

The location of the museum in Heinola is symbolic and historically significant. After the Second World War, Heinola served as an important settlement for evacuees from Käkisalmi, and the town’s population doubled when Karelians settled in the area. The museum honors this legacy, and does the stories of evacuees, who are part of the entire history of Itä-Häme.

Exhibitions and experiences

Käkisalmi museum combines tradition and modern technology in a unique way. The permanent exhibition tells about significant stages in the history of Käkisalmi and Karelia, and a special section is dedicated to the life stages of the Karelians who moved to the Heinola region. The museum’s presentation utilizes both traditional artefacts and modern presentation technology, offering visitors both information and experiences.

Cafe Käki operates in connection with the museum, which is a tribute to Karelian hospitality and conversational culture. In the cafe, you can enjoy traditional Karelian delicacies and participate in storytelling in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere. In addition, the museum houses the Käkipuoti, where you can get quality products.

Meeting place and many events

The museum also serves as a meeting place. Käenpesä, 

the museum’s conference and party space, offers a space for small-scale events and meetings, and it is also rented out to outsiders. The museum has the opportunity to organize many types of public events to enrich Heinola’s cultural life, within the limits allowed by the facilities.
